Cavalier AFS Fire Response Published Jan. 29, 2018 By Tech. Sgt. Shawn Thompson Cavalier Air Force Station CAVALIER AIR FORCE STATION, N.D. -- News of a large structure fire at the Boyd Square Building, Langdon, North Dakota (ND), prompted a mutual aid assistance call and response from the Cavalier Air Force Station Fire Department (CAFS FD) around 10pm on 4 January 2018. Officer Cory Laxdal, Driver-Operator Carl Sauer, along with firefighters Matt Kopp, and Morgan Kempert converged on the scene and began coordinating with the Langdon Volunteer Fire Department (VFD). CAFS FD was immediately assigned a hydrant to support the defensive fire operations along with two Pumpers from Langdon VFD and one Pumper from Munich VFD.Langdon, ND, is approximately 23 miles west of the installation along highway 5. Cold temperatures that evening did not make it easy for the 50 fire fighters on-scene. Below zero temps with the wind dropped it down to -25F throughout the night. Due to these bitterly cold conditions, the CAFS FD recalled and then dispatched two additional fire staff personnel: Driver-Operator Arlen Simon and Firefighter Robby Funaiole, for support and rehab functions. The CAFS team pumped over 75,000 gallons of water into the Historic 115- year-old Boyd Square Building. The building received extensive fire damage and will eventually need to be demolished but luckily no accidents or injuries were reported. The CAFS Fire Department is a contractor organization run by CGH Global and monitored by the Air Force. The department is manned by members from numerous ND communities reaching as far south as Fargo, ND and many of the firefighters are also members of the VFDs in their local communities when not working at CAFS. Lt Col Stephen Hobbs, 10th Space Warning Squadron Commander stated “We are unbelievably proud of the mutual aid provided by CAFS’s firefighting team to our neighbors in Langdon, ND – they continue to demonstrate that this installation and its members have a passion for supporting our surrounding communities!”
