Safety first, then teamwork

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- It is only mid-summer and drastic improvements are already underway with the 21st Security Forces Squadron at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

Recently, The Crime Prevention team debuted their newest member, Scruff, the crime prevention dog, during the annual Air Force Space Command picnic.

For those who may be unfamiliar with Scruff, he is the millennial nephew of the McGruff the Crime Dog whose popular tagline “Take a bite out of crime!” took the 90s by storm. McGruff recently decided to take a mentorship approach toward leading the crime prevention effort. He worked with the 21st Mission Support Group leadership to help secure funding and enlist the efforts of his nephew Scruff.

During his first appearance, he immediately connected with the younger generations sharing crime prevention information, shaking hands and the occasional tail.

The objective of crime prevention requires active participation from the community. Regardless of age or duty position, Team Pete is responsible in preventing crime across the base.

Scruff and the Peterson AFB Crime Prevention team will make an appearance at the upcoming Nickelodeon “Worldwide Day of Play on Sept. 30, 2017.

Additionally, The Crime Prevention program teamed up with Tierra Vista Housing to help ensure the base community remains safe throughout the summer, while ensuring children continue to wear the appropriate protective equipment.

Security Force members are handing out “Super Safe Citizen Citations” to children who practice safety and properly wear protective equipment and clothing. The citations are to raise awareness for safe practices, and if earned comes with a sweet incentive, a free ice cream cone from TVC Housing. The 21 SFS has handed out over 70 “Super Safe Citizen Citations” within the past month with many more to follow.
