Building Bridges: Community, Air Force leaders team up Published Aug. 15, 2017 By Master Sgt. Gary Larsen, 4th Space Control Squadron First Sergeant The 4th Space Control Squadron takes pride in being an active part of the community and finding ways to bring civilian and military leaders together. The unit is committed to promoting and maintaining open and positive relations with the local community, said Lt. Col. Christopher Fernengel, 4th SPCS commander. An honorary commander is one way to fulfil this goal. By pairing local leaders in business and local municipal governments with Air Force leaders. Bringing them together allows the military leaders to get the pulse of the civilian community's concerns, simultaneously helping civic leaders gain further understanding of missions, policies and daily challenges faced by today’s Airmen.Local businessman and entrepreneur Jay Cimino was selected as honorary commander by Fernengel in November 2016.Cimino founded the Mt. Carmel Center of Excellence, a non-profit organization intended to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare and wellness resources for military personnel, including veterans, retirees and their families.“It’s amazing what our honorary commander brings to the table,” said Chief Master Sgt. Chris Cumming, 4th SPCS superintendent. “The knowledge, experience and perspectives Mr. Cimino possess provides invaluable support to our Airmen.”Cumming stressed the importance of unit leadership connecting with influential local leaders to better support Airmen.Cimino volunteers time and energy to the Airmen of the 4th SPCS in various ways. He has attended flag folding ceremonies, funded Airmen to participate in the Bataan Memorial Death March, advised squadron leadership, and provided education for transitioning military.“The 4th SPCS wants to thank Mr. Cimino again,” Fernengel said. “We are indeed privileged he has accepted the invitation into our program. He is an integral part of our team now, and we hope this relationship continues for many years to come.”
