The Air Force has a new fitness training initiative that looks to be as exciting as it is challenging. The Alpha Warrior challenge is coming to Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado and it’s kicking off with a base-wide competition.

The Alpha Warrior Program is a new approach to functional fitness. It incorporates a “battle rig,” which is a large structure containing up to 12 obstacles designed to test individuals on a multitude of levels, similar to NBC’s American Ninja Warrior challenge course.

“The goal of Alpha Warrior is to train the four pillars of the Comprehensive Airmen Fitness model which are; physical, mental, social, and spiritual,” said Master Sgt. Kelly Gordon, Peterson AFB Fitness Center section chief.

“Each obstacle will focus on different areas of the body, but are designed so that it’s not just strength based, and challenges the individual to think about the obstacle first, to figure out how they will best be able to cross it,” Gordon said.

Alpha Warrior will bring the battle rig on May 12 and 13 to the outdoor basketball courts at the fitness center where everyone will be able to test their mettle on the course.

There’s a slew of events planned, from a meet and greet with notable American Ninja Warrior competitors, Kacy Catanzaro and Rebekah Bonilla, to a competition with prizes.

Active duty as well as civilians are encouraged to participate, but only active duty competitors will be eligible for the regional and national competitions

The active duty winner of the Peterson Alpha Warrior challenge will continue on to the regional competition which will take place in on Peterson as well and is scheduled in September.

The regional winner will be entered to attend the national competition which is scheduled to be held in San Antonio, Texas Nov. 11.

For those who want a sneak peak, the rig is going to be set up May 12, starting at 8 a.m. which will kick off the day’s festivities. Beginning at 3:30 p.m. people wishing to compete will be able to familiarize themselves with the obstacles in preparation for the competition the following day.

Registration will open up May 13 at 10 a.m. with the competition starting at 12:30 p.m.

After the event the battle rig will remain here at Peterson so people can continually train on it, the rules and regulations for that are still being decided.

If you think you have what it takes to be named the Peterson Alpha Warrior check in with the fitness center for more updates on the competition and get ready to push it to the limit.
