Crime prevention requires an active participation from community members and, more importantly, it begins with you. Regardless of age or job position, we all have the responsibility to prevent crime across Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

Over the past three months, 21st Security Forces Squadron have responded to multiple building break ins and packages being reported as stolen.

The 21st Security Forces Investigations section revealed criminals prefer to victimize soft target areas such as unlocked doors, dark areas and unsecured property. Many of these responses could have been avoided by practicing basic crime prevention techniques.

According to the FBI, crime rates within communities usually spike during summer months and the winter holidays.

The 21st SFS would like Team Pete to minimize the potential for crime by storing newly purchased items, purses, wallets, and cellular devices out of sight or place them in a locked trunk. Also, be cautious of your surroundings when utilizing an ATM.

If you are planning to leave for vacation, please ensure you ask a neighbor, co-worker or someone you trust to watch over your home while you are away. Finally, don't allow delivery boxes or mail to pile up outside your residence.

Although Peterson AFB received an honorable mention during the 2017 Commander-in-Chief's Annual Award for Installation Excellence conference, these few extra steps may help prevent crimes that occur on the installation.

Overall, the 21st Security Forces Squadron Crime Prevention program is designed to minimize or eliminate both the opportunity and desire to engage in criminal activity on Team Pete. If at any time you see or suspect something that may be out of the ordinary, report it immediately to Peterson AFB Law Enforcement Desk by calling 719-556-4000.

It is each member of the community’s responsibility to help reduce crime and provide a safe community for all of Team Pete to enjoy.
