SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. -- Team Peterson/Cheyenne Mountain faced Team Schriever during the Combined Federal Campaign Air Force Front Range Knockerball Championship at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, Nov. 10.
The game was scheduled as a late campaign blitz to support the fundraising. Both teams won their kick-off installation-level Knockerball games at the beginning of the CFC season.
“We just wanted to raise awareness that the CFC was still going on and we’re still actively participating as an installation,” said 2nd Lt. Scott Bean, 22nd Space Operations Squadron crew commander, and Schriever CFC installation project officer.
Peterson/Cheyenne Mountain took home the win in come-back fashion, beating Schriever 4-3 after a rough start for the combined opponents.
Schriever dominated the first half, scoring all of its points, holding their opponent to 1.
After a brief half-time, the teams changed ends, and Peterson/Cheyenne Mountain found its momentum, looking like a different team in the second half.
“There were a lot of missed goals and air balls because you can’t see your feet. I think we just pulled it together a little more. We got a little more comfortable with the balls around us and figured out more of a strategy - take every opportunity to score a couple goals,” said Cale Simmons, Peterson Space and Missiles Systems Center.
The newfound aggression was evident as Peterson/Cheyenne Mountain took considerably more shots, restricting Team Schriever to focus on defense.
Despite the come-back loss, Bean believed the event was successful in achieving its main purpose.
“Everyone had a good time and we raised awareness for the CFC,” said Bean. “I want to thank Master Sgt. (Adam) Harms-Colby from the Peterson/Cheyenne Mountain CFC team and all the players who came out to play as well as our referees.
