A Year at the Top of the World: Leading Pituffik Space Base

A polar bear roams alongside the road on main base at Pituffik SB, November 6, 2025. Polar bears are one of the numerous animals those stationed at Pituffik live alongside. People who live and operate at Pituffik must take extra precautions because of the harsh weather, polar bear presence, and remote location of the base. To guarantee dependable communication with emergency services, personnel usually carry portable radio devices at all times. (U.S. Space Force Courtesy Photo)
