21st Space Wing Airman of the Year

Staff Sgt. Sara Smyer, 21st Space Wing command post, orchestrated the first command post flight follow mission for the Air Force’s second busiest distinguished visitor flightline, supporting more than 83 flights in the first month of implementation. She was instrumental in bolstering regional Emergency Response Operations by integrating the command post, security forces and the fire department into a single command and control center. While deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, she reduced risk to coalition force convoys by directing 5,000 U.S. Army missions. As a Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation committee member, she helped raise $845,000 for new city parks. Finally, while attending Airman Leadership School, Sergeant Smyer garnered the John L. Levitow Award. (U.S. Air Force photo)
