Op Hestia

Four Canadian Forces air traffic controllers, including Capt. Rod Zeaton, 21st Operations Support Squadron, set up “Camp Bison” at the small uncontrolled airport in Jacmel, Haiti, where they directed up to 80 aircraft a day carrying medical supplies, medical personnel, food and water for the Haiti earthquake relief efforts. In the first few days, marshallers had to hold up cardboard signs on the runway telling pilots which frequency to use and the team’s “tower” was at ground level and was comprised of a portable ultra high frequency and very high frequency radio with a telephone handset and a lawn chair.
