Waldo Canyon fire
Lt. Col. Roger Sherman, 16th Space Control Squadron commander, accepts a certificate of recognition Aug. 28 from Scott Hente, Colorado Springs city council president, on behalf of the 21st Space Wing for volunteer efforts related to the Waldo Canyon fire recovery. Volunteers from more than two dozen area military organizations volunteered more than 1,300 hours as part of the recovery, helping with trash removal, traffic control, working with Army Corps of Engineers in making a sand bagging video for future natural disasters, and debris removal from destroyed homes. The fire broke out June 23 west of Manitou Springs, and over the course of several days spread north and east, burning into Colorado Springs, destroying 346 homes. At the peak of the fire, more than 35,000 residents, including many military families, were evacuated from their homes. (U.S. Air Force photo/Lea Johnson)
