When I was fairly new to the Air Force, my first supervisor said, "Gus, you're going to the Self Aid Buddy Care instructor course." I wasn't too sure about that, but I got through it and now I've taught more than 200 security force members. Because of this experience, I not only have more confidence, but I'm much more apt to listen when I feel that I can approach my supervisor and others when I need help or advice, even more so when I know they are committed to my continuous learning.

A mentor should be committed to continuous learning, be knowledgeable in their career field and able to share what it takes to be successful in the Air Force. If a mentor is knowledgeable, their Airman will receive the correct answers to questions which will result in more pride in their career. Also, mentors should be able to give direction on how Airmen can preserve our standing as the greatest Air Force in the world.

A mentor knows the answers or how to get them, and their life experiences give them wisdom they pass on. Mentors realize higher education is important in life development and teach their Airmen how higher learning will benefit them, the Air Force and our country.

An Airman will usually follow the example their mentor sets so it is particularly important that Air Force mentors know who they are and develop a leadership style that fits their personality. The mentor needs to present themselves professionally at all times.

A good mentor should remember to be them selves - their walk should match their talk. The results of being a good mentor will be the satisfaction of knowing they have made a difference in an Airman's life. As an Airman, I appreciate the mentorship I have received from Tech. Sgt. Thomas Williamson, my first supervisor, who pointed me in the right direction and kept me on the right path!

For me, it's obvious: having a good mentor with these qualities improves an airman's professional growth and makes a difference in their career and life. Everyone should strive to obtain these qualities to one day set our Airman in the right direction.
