In order to settle problems in 19th Century New Mexico, the U.S. Army called upon a group of recently freed black men to form the 9th and 10th Cavalries, which subsequently became known as "Buffalo Soldiers." It is believed to be a sign of respect bestowed by Indians in comparison to the great buffalo; for it would have been unlikely that such a name be given to an enemy had respect been lacking.
