The team, including the much-awaited Julemand, arrived at the village of Qaanaaq in the arctic darkness at 1 p.m. to deliver gifts to the children of the community.

However, until recently, personnel at Thule Air Base, Greenland, could not easily enjoy those luxuries due to a slow and intermittent commercial internet connection. In June, the 821st SBG was successful in upgrading their commercial internet by accessing Low Earth Orbit satellites, thanks in large part to the Air Force Research Laboratory.

At the invitation of the Mute Bourup Egede, Prime Minister of Greenland, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark paid an official visit to Greenland from Oct. 8 to 12, 2021. The visit was originally scheduled for July 2021, but was postponed due to a series of COVID-19 outbreaks throughout Greenland. During the trip, Her Majesty visited Illulissat, (the capital city of Nuuk), Pituffik (Thule Air Base), and Station Nord maintaining a theme of commemorating national history, while also paying tribute to the Danish and U.S. military partnership.

Far above the Arctic circle, the small community at Thule Air Base holds an annual festival to celebrate the end of their long, dark winter and the arrival of spring. For more than 40 years, the men and women of the 821st Air Base Group have welcomed nearby Greenlanders to “Greenland Heritage Week,” a chance for everyone in Greenland’s far north to get together and share traditions, handicrafts, and meals during three days in April.
